El Gallinero Madrid
El Gallinero is a shanty settlement, 12 km from Madrid’s city center and inhabited by around 500 gipsy Rumanian people, 300 of them kids. With no tap water nor sewage system, it probably is Spain’s and Europe’s biggest shanty area. 78% of it’s inhabitants are illiterate. Most of its shacks are 18 m2, so members from a same family sleep in a single space sharing their intimacies. 98% of the kids living at El Gallinero will not make it to their 60s. A muddy area during the rainy season, it becomes an extreme place for living due to winters’ cold temperatures and summers’ dusty heat. Most of its inhabitants make a living by scrap or drug dealing, begging or even pickpocketing.
Although a place in the heart of the big city which certainly will take you in, its inhabitants feel free spirited and make their most to live in harmony with a society which has opposite rules to their own traditions and values. Hemmed in between the highway and the lanes of the High Speed Train, El Gallinero has around 20.000m2.
An island resistant to the administrative power. A power with a blind sight to a complex reality having difficult solutions. An apocalyptic landscape in a dream Europe.
In 2018 the Madrid City Council dismantled the town and relocated its inhabitants.
Es un asentamiento de chabolas de personas de etnia gitana y nacionalidad rumana. Situado a 12 kilómetros del centro de Madrid donde viven cerca de 500 personas, 300 de ellas niños. Sin agua corriente ni alcantarillado. Probablemente la concentración de chabolas más grande de España y Europa.
El 78 % de sus habitantes son analfabetos funcionales. Las chabolas tienen una media de 18 metros cuadrados donde las familias duermen en un mismo espacio compartiendo intimidades. El 98 % niños de El Gallinero no van a superar los 60 años de vida. Las calles se vuelven un barrizal con las lluvias. El frío en invierno y el polvoriento calor en verano hace de El Gallinero un lugar extremo para vivir.
La mayoría se dedican a la chatarra, mendicidad, hurtos o menudeo de drogas. Un lugar en plena Comunidad de Madrid que no deja indiferente. Pese a todo, se sienten libres y se esfuerzan por vivir en armonía en una sociedad con reglas incompatibles con sus tradiciones y valores. Encerrados entre la autovía y la vías del AVE, El Gallinero tiene unos 20.000 metros cuadrados. Una isla que resiste frente a la administración que impotente e incómoda mira a otro lado ante una realidad compleja de difícil solución.
Un paisaje miserable en la Europa soñada.
En 2018 el Ayuntamiento de Madrid desmantela el poblado y realoja a sus habitantes.
